January 2013 Birchbox Review

Well, in the new year, I planned to cancel almost all of my subscription boxes (except for Citrus Lane!).  I felt I received less than the box value, often for products that I rarely or never used! I am SO glad I cancelled BirchBox, I just wish the cancellation would have taken place before this month's box.

My box contained:

  • Small vial of HArvey Prince Skinny Chic. It is almost an apple sort of scent. Fairly fruity. Not the type of scent I would wear in the winter. The vial is one of the sample vials you can generally get at any cosmetic counter or for free from places like Sephora. Value: $0.
  • Deborah Lippman The Stripper to Go Nail finger mitts (it apparently removes nail polish). This is a small foil pack with 1 individual mitt. 6 of the mitts sell for $12. Value: $2 (I will say, I would NEVER spend $2 for each nail polish removal I do. That seems a bit excessive to me).
  • My Prime Multi-Purpose Mattifying Moisturizer. .3 oz. According to the my website, the full sized is 2 ounces and $68!!! That makes the sample (in theory) a value of 10.20. However the sample is a 1-3 times use sample.
  • Amika Color pHerfection Shampoo. .68 oz. Based on online per oz value $1.04
  • The Balm Hot Mama Highlighter. .035 oz. BAsed on Amazon per ounce value $2.37.
If you add these all up, the value is above the $10 I paid for the box. However, I have many, many moisturizers, shampoos, and cleansers. I am not sure how other people can continuously receive the boxes without having a huge hoard of make-up and other cosmetic products. Not that having a hoard of it is a bad thing :)

In the end, I decided it was just not worth the $120 a year I was spending on the box and cancelled my subscription.

With all of that being said, you can always sign up with BirchBox HERE if you would like to.

  1. That's the same box I got and I loved it! It's a subscription SAMPLING service. But different strokes for different folks. I can't imagine cancelling BB. The review points alone are worth it! I get half the value of my box back in those alone!

  2. Yeah, if it was my only one I would have been more reluctant. I just ended up with SO many samples just laying around. I subscribed to 4 different boxes, and it just ended up being too much stuff. I decided to just pool my money and go with Little Black Bag.

  3. I received the same darn box and was also less then thrilled. I do not want perfume samples and thought I changed my profile to help that. I see others received hair products that I would of loved to try..so frustrated this may well be my last month too!
