Charm It Review

Are you looking for that perfect small gift for your daughter? We are so excited to review! My oldest daughter received a charm bracelet for Christmas and fell in love. Since she is only 12, we did not want to pay a lot of money for an every day wear one, which is what makes Charm It so fantastic! I gave her the base bracelet.

We have slowly added more for events. We picked one up for back to school shopping and even picked one up for my youngest daughter who has been begging for one. There are so many different charms that the bracelet can be used for small children and big ones!

I love that they sell the charms right at the counter at Gap Kids. I usually pick a couple up when I am there buying clothes for the kids. We can also pick them up at our local Scheel's store.

MamaBreak received a bracelet to review on the site. We did not receive any other type of compensation. As always, our experiences and opinions are our own.

So, when I saw the previews  I was intrigued. I was not sure what I was getting myself into, but it looked . . . interesting. Interesting enough for me to watch the first time. And I watched the fist episode, and thought I "got" the show. I immediately thought it was going to be like "Person's Unknown" which I thought was ok. I was SO wrong and completely off based.

Turns out it was about something completely different which made the show a million times more incredible. There were several weeks that I changed my mind, thought I knew what was happening, and BAM, new twist! It has been a fantastic ride, watching the show this summer and I cannot wait to see what happens next!!! It is worth checking out! For those without cable or local channels (like me),

Read it Wednesday: The Fault in Our Stars

This post contains affiliate links.

Ok, this is an older book-- but if you have not read it yet--- well, you simply must. Seriously, you will need them. Lots and lots of Kleenex. When I read this, I was a complete puddle of tears. It was cathartic and healing.

As someone who has lost a close family member to cancer, I have received a TON of well meaning "cancer" books along the way.
But this was not a book about cancer. It is a book about love. About taking the risk to love. About knowing that there will be pain from that love, but still falling with every ounce of your being.
I read this book in one afternoon, but I have no doubt it will stay with me forever.

To those wondering, I have not seen the movie-- still. I want to set aside a time I can be a great big puddle of tears again.

TV Tuesday: The Returned

This post contains affiliate links.

I am just finishing up Season 1 and am enjoying it much more than I thought I would.

I started watching this because my mom recommended it to me. It does remind me a lot of Resurrection. A LOT. So, if you saw that show and enjoyed it, you will probably enjoy this as well. We liked the first episode so much, we purchased the entire season (we do not have cable television). It is intriguing and each episode builds on the last, creating a really good story line. The acting was good, and I enjoyed the overall season. The basic premise is that several people return from the dead. They all died at different times, in different ways, and do not seem to be connected to each other (at first) with the exception that they all lived/ died in the same small town. Unlike Resurrection, there is not a mass implode of dead people in the town. It is a small number of people, and you follow each of their stories.
The only downside to the show is that the season ends on a bit if a cliff hanger (ok a huge cliff hanger), and the show did not get picked up for a second season (as of June 10, 2015 that was the news).

TV Tuesday: Arranged

So, I LOVED Married at First Sight last year/ season, but this year's season has been a little ho-hum. While I was on Hulu, it recommended I watch Arranged. I really did not know what to think at first, and I missed the first episode (so I STILL do not have the complete story because Hulu no longer has it, nor does the FYI website). However, the couples have kind of grown on me.

The show follows three couples that are in an "arranged" marriage:

  • Maria and Christian: They both come from Romani families who belong to the gypsy culture. Apparently, in their culture, marrying early is quite common, and in this case the couple is 17 and 18. They live in New York.
  • Ragini and Veeral: They both come from Eastern Indian families, and are both 34 years old. Just last week, Ragini was promoted to VP at her company, while Veeral I believe has a medial license (but works in the administrative side of things). They live in California.
  • Meghan and Josh: Both are from a small town in South Carolina and come from Southern families. She is 24 and he is 28 and both are just finishing graduate school and live in Charleston. I feel like the sense of being "arranged" here is a little stretched, as they were simply set up on a date by her mom and his dad (I guess technically that is arranged???).
As you can imagine, the youngest couple seems to face the greatest challenges as they not only are adjusting to married life, but really are just learning how to be adults as well. As far as I can tell, neither has a job (they live with his parents), but perhaps that is the norm for their culture.
I enjoy watching all three couples, and the people on the show are relatable and likable as people (well, for the most part).
You can catch the episodes on the FYI channel, but if you do not have the channel, episodes 5-7 are available on Hulu. The season finale will be airing this Tuesday.

Read of the Week Wednesday: The House Next Door

This post contains affiliate links

The House Next Door from Anne Rivers Siddons was a book recommended to me last summer by one of my online "mom" groups. I have to say, the beginning of the book seemed fairly solid. I enjoyed the general plot line, and the first half of the book (approximately) was a decent read. I was able to get through it at a steady pace, and was enjoying the book. Then, about midway through, things took a turn for the worse, and the book went downhill fast. I did not enjoy the ending (I thought it was rushed and lacking), and it just seemed kind of to run out of steam. The characters never really went anywhere over the course of the book, and they all seemed very one-dimensional, especially everyone outside of the main focus of the book.
The basic premise is of a moderately wealthy couple who has a "haunted" house built next door, and the terror of what their neighbors experience.
However, if you like books about haunted houses, it is a decent read. It is easy to get through, hard to put down, and will keep you reading. I would say it is a good book to read when you are relaxing on vacation.

TV Tuesday: When Calls the Heart

Over the long weekend I was sick, sick, sick. And to top it off my Kindle TV was not working (which a whole different story), so I had to plug in the old Roku which would only stream my Netflix Family account (because that is the default). So, I was limited in what I could watch . . . so I picked the first thing that sounded remotely interesting, and happened upon "When Calls the Heart."

Am I completely in love with this show? Yes, I think it is safe to assume at this point that I am completely in love with this show. It is about a wealthy heiress, Elizabeth, who travels out "West" (in this case Western Canada) in order to be a school teacher in a mining town. Set in the early 1900s, the show just captured my heart. There is also a mountie, the school children, and mining widows as the main characters of the show. The show reminds me of Lark Rise to Candleford (if you have not seen it, another fantastic show), or even a little like Anne of Green Gables. It is heart-warming, charming, and enchanting.

Bugs, Shapes and Robots Face Paint for Toddlers

FREE for a limited time! (usually $2.99)

We love the Bugs, Shapes, and Robots Face Paint for Toddlers. What I really appreciated was that each shape had a goal. So rather than just "follow the line," your child will be engaged by trying to bring the line to the next bug to "fill up" their bug jar. There is also a parent area, which I loved navigating. A fun that is free right now!

Read of the Week Wednesday: The Girl on the Train

This post contains affiliate links.

So, we are trying something new this Wednesday. We read a LOT, and since summer is fast approaching, we are hoping to read even more. So, each week, we hope to bring you the book we JUST finished (it will motivate me to read a book a week too)! These will not be books that I was sent to review. Just books that I am casually reading, meaning they caught my eye. :) First book:

The Girl on the Train

http://amzn.to/1PgBj9j

I bought The Girl on the Train mainly because I had heard a lot of buzz about it. I had heard from several people that it was pretty good. I have seen many comparisons to Gone Girl, and so I thought I would give it a shot.

What I enjoyed about it: It was a quick read. It took me just one weekend to sail through the entire book. I was completely engrossed in it, and it held my attention. It was one of those books I did not want to put down. I felt connected to the well written characters, and I liked that the main character grew as the book progressed.

What I didn't like: It was not so much that I did not like something, but it was just not the "wow" factor I was hoping for. I am wondering if my experience would have been different if I had not heard it compared to Gone Girl. But, I did, so I can only go in with that experience (and now YOU have heard that too). I really expected something a little more. Gone Girl completely took me aback. I did not see the book coming, and that is rare for me. I saw the ending to this book coming from a LONG ways. There was nothing that surprised me, nothing that shocked me, and I was hoping for more of that WOW factor.

In the end, I give The Girl on the Train 4 out of 5 stars. It was a good read, and I think the perfect summer beach read.

 Promise-You-Wont-Tell

Enter Riley Freeman, 17-year-old honor student. Saturday afternoon Riley quietly placed a little strawberry sticker on her private area and pretended it was a tattoo. She didn’t tell anyone about it. That night she went to a slumber party that featured drinking and boys. Riley fell asleep, woke up the next day with no reason to think anything happened… …Until Monday, at school, when a classmate called her Strawberry. Coincidence or crime? Dani agrees to investigate. And the roller coaster ride begins.

Unplayable-Lie
Unplayable Lie by David Myles RobinsonWhen Eddie Bennett began playing golf as a way to bond with his father, he quickly displayed a rare talent for the game. After a long and at times tragic road to the PGA Tour, all of the hard work appears to have paid off when it seemed as if Eddie would be a sure candidate for Rookie of the Year. Then Eddie sees something he should not have seen on the back nine of the Congressional Country Club. During a practice round for his first U.S. Open, he witnesses a murder.

 The-Snails-Castle

The novel, with its unexpected twists, draws you into the inner lives of its many captivating characters. It is a story of ambition, love, lust and revenge set against the backdrop of romantic Montreal in the early 1960’s.

 Night-Terror
Night Terror by Jeff Gunhus Ten years after her abduction and near-sacrifice to the Source, Sarah Tremont struggles to be a normal teenager. As much as she’s tried to suppress the power inside of her, it’s grown dangerously strong and has drawn the attention of those who want to possess her power for themselves. The nightmare that she thought was long over starts again as powerful forces descend upon Prescott City to seek her out. With her parents and Joseph Lonetree’s help, Sarah must stand up to an evil much more powerful than the one she faced in the caves a decade earlier.
